Description
Join us Wednesday, June 14th, at 2:30 p.m. for our writing workshop on essays for scholarships and college applications.
College application essay writing can be an overwhelming experience for many students. Not only can the stakes be high, but it is not always easy for students to write about themselves. Many students don’t know where to begin or how to come up with a topic or topics to write about. Others know what story they want to tell but don’t know how to organize their narrative. This workshop will help students:
- understand and analyze essay questions
- brainstorm essay topic(s)
- select an essay topic and generate a narrative with details and description
- explore organizational choices
- give and receive developmental feedback
Some of what we will focus on include the following:
Organization/Structure
We will look at the overall structure of the essay. It is vital that your essay follow a logical thought progression. Personal statements should not veer too far away from the essay topic but should still explore various sides of your personality, background, and interests.
Tone, voice, and style
Proofreading
After completing your essay’s content, we will proofread it together to check the flow. In other words, we will ensure the essay reads beautifully and is free of passive voice, clunky sentences, or difficult-to-read phrases. This is the last step in the revision stage.
