Description

Join us Thursday, June 15th, at 2:30 p.m. for our writing workshop on personal statements for college applications.

What a personal statement IS:
From your perspective:

• It may help you choose a specialty if you are still undecided
• It refines your ideas about why you have chosen a particular specialty
• It clarifies what you are looking for in a program
• It prepares you for your interview

But is the process of writing a personal statement? What content should be included?

Some of what we will focus on include the following:

Organization/Structure

We will look at the overall structure of the personal statement. It is vital that your personal statements follow a logical thought progression. Personal statements should not veer too far away from the topic but should still explore various sides of your personality, background, and interests.

Tone, voice, and style

Your college application/scholarship statements are yours. You should write them with your unique voice and style. Unlike other formulaic essays you’ve written in high school, personal statements allow you to be creative and show off your personality. These help colleges and universities understand who you are and what you’re like. The tone and voice of your statement should reflect that. If you’re soft-spoken and intentional with your words, how you write and what you write can convey those unique qualities.

Proofreading

After completing your personal statement, we will proofread it together to check the flow. In other words, we will ensure the personal statement reads beautifully and is free of passive voice, clunky sentences, or difficult-to-read phrases. This is the last step in the revision stage.
